«When do we reach our peak of sexual activity?»
I am P. I am a 35 yrs old woman married to J, a 41 year old man. We have no children but purely by choice, we are very career orientated at present. Our life together is wonderful. We lead a very active social life despite our very demanding jobs. Every week end, we have great fun. As you can note, everything is okay in our couple.
My question is of sexual nature. We have sex regularly but I want to have more sex. I want to know what is a reasonable number of times one can expect to have sex. Is it the same for a man as for a woman? When does a man or a woman reach his/her peak in terms of sexual activity?
People are still so reluctant to talk about sex. It is still very much a taboo subject. Some people make as if it is sordid and dirty hence their reluctance to even dare talk about it. What do you think? Should we not be more liberal in the way we approach the subject.
I would be grateful for an overview on the topic.
P
Thank you for all your questions. I will do my best to answer them. Perhaps, this is a subject that I would need to write on more than one occasion in order to give the maximum of information. There is much information on sex available. It would be practically impossible to avoid the subject even if you wanted or tried to. It is on all the media, be it in books, magazines, newspapers, radio, cinema and television.
Sex as it happens in books or on the television bears little relation as to what sex is really like. There are so many myths about men and women regarding sex, yet a lot of people still believe that they are true. It matters because these myths create misunderstanding which may very well be the reasons of much unhappiness.
Perhaps, another time, I will enlarge more about these myths. You have not said how long you have been married because that can be a very relevant fact. There is an old adage which goes as follows: "If a couple were to put a coin in a jar every time they have sex in their first year together and took one coin out every time they had sex after the first year of marriage, the jar would take a long time to be emptied".
There are loads of questions regarding the difference between the sexuality of men and women. For men, at around 17, their sexual vigour and potency are at its maximum. By the time, they are in their thirties, their sexual demands have become more manageable and they are more able to control their physiological responses.
For a woman, it is different, in her teen years there is a sexual curiosity, a longing for romance, these are driving factors in the way she behaves and of course, there is a desire not to be different than her peers. By the time she is twenty, sex becomes more enjoyable and by her thirties, she is much more active.
We cannot have definite views about the frequency of sex because it does not only concern the needs and desire of the individual but that of the couple as well. It is reasonable for you to want more and more sex for your own satisfaction but it is not reasonable for you to expect your husband to satisfy these needs if his sexual needs, his libido or even his physiological ability do not match your demands.
That is where the need for a compromise will be necessary when our expectations and hopes are not matched in reality by the other partner. That is why you need to communicate and understand each other sexual needs, so that a way to suit both of you may be found.
Arguably, it does take women longer to become confident about their sexual needs. It is only when women find themselves in the comfort zone of a committed and stable relationship that they feel relaxed enough and confident enough to explore their own sexuality fully.
There need to be more careful talking and more generous listening to help to find a solutions that you would have otherwise missed. Remember sexual needs are different for each individual, it would be a miracle if your needs coincided exactly with those of your partner. There are all sorts of situations, the way you like sex, the amount of sex you need, the different moods, so that is why developing a sex life that suits both of you taking into account these very variations is important but it will need some flexibility on both sides.
