Booed singer Roberto Alagna puts on rival show

Alagna, who walked out in the middle of Aida last week after being heckled, began singing in the Piazza della Scala just before Aida was about to start. The singer, 43, took a photograph of the opera house on his mobile phone. ?I came to take a souvenir, my last happy memory of La Scala,? he told Italy?s Ansa News Agency. The French-born tenor performed a passage from Puccini?s Madame Butterfly recently in front of onlookers and photographers, singing: ?Farewell, flowered sanctuary of happiness and love.? He added that he did not know when he would see the famous opera venue again. Alagna is planning to sue La Scala if it does not allow him to re-join the Aida cast. The tenor had been given a leading role in the Verdi classic, directed by Franco Zeffirelli. The opera house management said he would not sing the remaining scheduled performances as he had technically broken his contract. Alagna told reporters outside the theatre that his lawyers had begun proceedings, but said he was sorry for the way things had turned out. ?I dearly loved this theatre and its audience, I cancelled a very important production at Covent Garden to come here but I came with great joy,? he said.
