Eight road victims in a fortnight
December has started very badly in terms of road safety. One accident made two more victims last Thursday morning in Grand-Bay. Two young men, going home after a party with friends, were killed on the spot after their car left the road and crashed into a tree on the road side. At their moving funerals held on Thursday afternoon, many friends and relatives came to pay them a last tribute. A police enquiry has been opened to state the reasons for such a violent accident.
Pâquerette Ramjaune is among those who heard the crash in the early hours of that Thursday morning. She was preparing breakfast for her husband when she heard a big noise. As she ran outside to see what was happening, she saw the crashed car and immediately called the police. Other witnesses, however, state that the two young men were already dead.
Philippe Julien Lawrence Nairac (23) and his friend, Michel Clarenc (24), were going from Grand-Bay to their home in the north when the tragedy happened near Merville hotel. The impact was so violent that none of the two friends survived.
This is far from being the first fatal accident. Eight people have died in road accidents since the beginning of December. Another 20 year-old man died in a car accident shortly after being taken to hospital last Saturday. As this month is renowned for being a deadly one, people should be particularly careful on the roads. The police have announced they would be more vigilant and make more checks on roads to prevent such tragedies.
