?When people talk, listen completely? Most people never listen. Nor do they observe.? Ernest Hemingway

Hearing and listening are separate activities. Hearing is the reception of sound waves picked up by the ear and sent to the brain. Listening is an activity that involves reception, selection, organization and interpretation of aural stimuli. As you learn to be an effective listener, you become a more effective speaker. How do you listen successfully ? What are the tips and techniques ?

Uncritical listening - When you listen uncritically to others, they feel relaxed and liked. And they like you. Wait until you have heard the speaker before you conclude that he/she is or is not worthy of attention. Uncritical listening can help make good things happen to you. Do not prejudge either the speaker or the speech.

Become Listener-Centered - ?Sit back and listen? is poor advice. Leaning slightly forward, in a comfortable but alert position, helps listening. Cut out mental distractions ? day dreaming, counter arguments or future planning. Physical distractions may include sensations that interfere with our attention ? buzzing neon light, smells such as a familiar perfume or curry from the kitchen. Fend off mental diversions. They can send your mind elsewhere and activate prejudices.

Listen for the main points- In every speech what is important for you is to remember the main points the speaker makes, and any subpoints that support these main points. Try always to retain the meat of what?s said and discard the fat.

Don?t react emotionally - Keep your emotions in check when listening ? even if you hear something disturbing. Listen wholeheartedly, from the speaker?s point of view, not yours.

5. Focus and take notes - If you have difficulty listening, try taking notes to capture key points. This forces you to focus and make a précis of what is being said.
