Surely the rift created by those GPTU between General Purpose (GP) teachers and Asian language (AL) teachers in primary schools has taken an alarming trend. GP teachers look down at us AL teachers as mere opportunists who want to take hold of their so-called acquired rights. Same has even given rise to disputes or even divorce between spouses where one is an AL and the other a GP. Not a long time back in all schools bother category of teachers were living in perfect harmony like a perfect family. Now we are living hell in schools. Frequently stabbed in our back, adverse comments or even left out in any activity, even the end of year get-together celebrations. We are humans humans too. We chose this profession to impart our knowledge of asian languages to our fellow children, so that they can, in the future, converse flently with people speaking the same language. We, Mauritians are the pride of the Indian Ocean area as we are bilinguals but we must be more proud as many of us are multilinguals. Muslims, Telegus, Chinese, Hindus, Tamils and GP teachers must be thankful to those AL teachers as they have done much to enable their children to read and understand their respective holy books. Their contribution is enormous but never taken into considaration. The only, prayer, as an AL teacher, is that ?You, GP teachers. Hope one day your child becomes an AL teacher and he/she will have to bear yours and others wrath as GP teachers?.
