Board dissociates itself from director
The troubles of the managing director of Air Mauritius, Nirvan Veerasamy, may not yet be over. The backbencher of the Social Alliance, Suren Dayal, made it clear that he would come forward with other questions in Parliament in the coming weeks. Moreover, a press conference of the board of Air Mauritius at the end of last week suggested that Air Mauritius is keeping aloof from its director for the moment.
Even though the dismissal of Nirvan Veerasamy has not been mentioned at all, the board made it clear that it was “taking all these allegations very seriously”. It appears as a way of “disowning” the managing director, who has nevertheless denied all the allegations so far.
The minister of Tourism, Xavier-Luc Duval has had to face questions from Suren Dayal in Parliament for the past three or four weeks. He mentioned conflicts of interest between Nirvan Veerasamy’s post at Air Mauritius and his other positions in other companies such as Veling. In view of such allegations, the board decided it had to react and asked the managing director to take the necessary steps.
Avoid bad impressions</B>
Even though the local company made it clear it had no information, so far, that there were any conflicts of interest between Nirvan Veersamy’s position and Air Seychelles, it nevertheless pointed out that the managing director could have made public his interest in Veling when the contract between Air Mauritius and Air Seychelles was renewed. Moreover, the board asked Nirvan Veerasamy to make sure his name doesn’t appear anymore as “director on leave” on the website of Veling. He said he had already looked after this question.
As Nirvan Veerasamy is also a shareholder in General Aviation Mauritius (GAM), he accepted – at the request of the board – to ask Hans Wagner, a director of GAM, to step down from the McKinsey Steering committee.
Last but not least, his brother Jim will no longer be the legal adviser of the local company. Likewise, Mrs. C. Veerasamy, his mother, will not provide her horticultural services to the company anymore to avoid making any bad impressions on the public.
Even though the board doesn’t want to say so, it is clear that it is taking steps to avoid involvement if any of the allegations in Parliament prove to be true. As for the managing director, he continues to deny the allegations and wants to go on with his work as usual for the benefit of the company as well as the country.
