<B>The report by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) reveals that Mauritian hotels are the most expensive in the world. Could you comment these statistics?</B>
We are in presence of contradictory statistics. For example, the figures in the NACO (Netherlands Airport Consultants) report are different. It seems that the WTTC report is based on rates obtained from a sampling that includes the Royal Palm and St Géran, which are above the $ 1,000 range.
<B>There are many other world destinations, which are as beautiful as Mauritius. Don’t you think hotels should make an effort to reduce their prices and allow Mauritius to remain competitive?</B>
We need to remain competitive. That’s why we reduce our room rates down to 40% in the low season.
<B>Do you believe that Mauritius should keep its image of “high-class destination”?</B>
Yes. This is in line with the official policy of the country since the 1970s. It should be noted that this policy boosts up the image of our destination. Large, small and medium establishments all benefit from this.
<B>The government has expressed its will to review the air access policy to attract more tourists. The reduction in the price of hotel rooms may help in that perspective… Don’t you think so?</B>
The reduction in room rates should obey the rule of the market. This explains the significant fluctuation in our average room rates in the peak season and the low one. In 2004, the lowest rate was Rs 3,553 and the highest Rs 8,927.
