Jealousy made him insane. Rakesh Ghumariah (29) knifed his wife 49 times and his daughter 22 times before taking tablets with rum and setting fire to himself. He had convinced himself that his wife Pinky (24) was having an affair and that – four year old Vanshika was the fruit of this illicit affair. He is now admitted in the Burns Unit of Victoria Hospital under police custody and he is not in a critical state.

Pinky’s mother, Beewantee, has much difficulty to overcome the loss of her daughter and granddaughter. Although she knew the couple had been going through tough times during the recent months, she never thought the situation would reach a point of no return.

Yet, Pinky had called her two weeks ago to tell her that she was going to the police because her husband had battered her. The same evening, Beewantee had gone to Bon Accueil to see Pinky and Vanshika but Pinky didn’t want to say much about the incident. Pinky had got a protection order and was supposed to go before the judge to settle this problem today. This could have been the reason why Rakesh was so furious. He wanted to convince his wife not to go ahead with the court case.

But there was no hint that such a tragedy would occur on Friday evening. Pinky’s mother relates that she phoned one hour before and spoke with her sister; she didn’t seem to have any problem. But “she never really told me her problems.” The mother had never accepted Rakesh’s behaviour. He and Pinky had been in love when the latter was a teenager. But as soon as she reached eighteen, Rakesh insisted to live with her after the civil wedding. There was no religious ceremony. Beewantee had not appreciated but she had decided to forget it at the beginning of this year.

As soon as Rakesh is better, he will have to answer for his crime. But he has already confessed his crime when the police arrived at his place. After his crime and failed attempt to commit suicide, he called his sister asking her to come urgently as he was suffering. Unfortunately, when she arrived and called the police – after seeing the horrible scene – it was too late for Pinky and her daughter. The medical services could only confirm their death.

They have the same name, Pinky, and may have been the victims of the same trait of character. Pinky Bhugun has not been found yet despite the police search since she disappeared ten days ago. The only one who could help, her fiancé Roshan Jeebodh, hanged himself in his police after he had been provisionally charged with her kidnapping. Although they were engaged since last November, Pinky had started an affair with a student nurse like her. Her family, who had never really accepted her relationship with Roshan, had promised their daughter to the student. But Roshan could not accept it. On Friday 9th September, Roshan encountered his fiancée with the student nurse in Botanical Gardens. According to the latter, Roshan lost his temper and forced Pinky to follow him. Since that moment, Pinky has not been seen again. For her parents, Roshan is the n° 1 suspect in her kidnapping. But now that he has put an end to his life, all scenarios can be considered…
