<B>Facilitating proceedings after minor accidents</B>
Minor road accidents without casualties will now be settled out of court. According to the new amendment of the Road Traffic Act, as from 1st August, not only car drivers but also motorcycle and moped riders will have to carry their driver’s licence at all times, an insurance form and a yellow chalk. In case of accident, they will have to mark the tracks of the tyres on the road before moving the vehicles. They must then fill in the form that will be returned to the insurance company within five days. “Minor accidents cause huge traffic jams. This new measure could reduce the problem”, Transport minister Anil Bachoo declared last Thursday. Drivers who do not have their drivers licence on them after 1st August will be liable to a Rs 2000 fine.
<B>Gastro-enteritis epidemic kills three infants</B>
Three children have died of gastro-enteritis within the last couple of weeks. In spite of a public release by the Ministry of Health, calling for caution, the three of them appeared to be in a very bad state of dehydration when they were admitted in hospital. They had reached a critical state and nothing could be done to save them. According to official statistics, the disease affected more than 400 persons last week, half of them children. “Within one week, we had to treat 200 persons,” Dr Amrit Rajkumar, consultant and pediatrician at Hospital Jeetoo said. The ministry of Health has thus called upon parents to be more aware of their children’s health. “Parents should take their children to hospital as soon as they are affected to avoid dehydration.”
<B>Ex-police boss Raj Dayal to face trial </B>
Magistrate Devianee Beesoondoyal has rejected the request of lawyer Yousouf Mohamed to cancel the charge against his client, Raj Dayal. The former police commissioner is said to have “lied” to the commission of enquiry dealing with the purchase of equipment for the police in 1997. He had to give explanations about alleged bribes that he is said to have taken on this transaction. Raj Dayal and his lawyer advocated the fact that there too much time had elapsed between the alleged crime and the trial to maintain the charges. But the magistrate did not agree and has maintained them against the former commissioner.
