Port-Louis preparing for major facelift
Port Louis is teeming with renovation projects. The capital city will soon include a Hawker?s Palace, an underground parking space at Cathedral Square, a New Court House, a revamped Jardin de la Compagnie, an aquarium in Caudan Waterfront and a renovated China Town. These projects are part of the plan to develop the capital at an estimated cost of about Rs 600 million.
Last Monday a committee, presided by the prime minister, Paul Bérenger, gathered to discuss the application of this ?master plan?, as well as taking stock of its progress. A committee has also been set up by the Municipality of Port Louis for short and long term projects. For example, there are plans to convert some streets into pedestrian areas.
The increase in the number of court rooms will help make the administration of justice quicker and more accessible. The new building will also include specialised court rooms, one of which will house a Family Court.
The Hawkers Palace project has been assigned to Gamma, which tendered the project for Rs 536 million. It is due to start on 22nd May. The architectural plans by Lam Po Tang & Siew show a 16-floor building with a thousand stalls and two food courts.
The estimated cost of the Caudan aquarium to be set up in a renovated warehouse is Rs 20 million. The China Town development, mostly inspired by what the prime minister saw during his visit to China, will also start shortly.
