One-stop shop for smoother export procedures
The Mauritius Customs and Excise Department has taken steps to make exporters? lives easier. With its new one-stop shop, companies from the export processing zone should face far less red tape when exporting their goods. This move is part of the plan to modernise the customs department, an initiative of customs comptroller, Bert Cunningham.
All export departments including export declarations or certificates of origin are now grouped under the same roof to make administrative procedures easier and quicker. While exporters had to go from IKS building to Dragon House (about one kilometre apart) to get through the administrative steps, all the services are now grouped on two floors in Dragon House.
Such an initiative is welcome in the sector. Operators themselves should feel happy about gaining time? and money. The president of the Mauritius Export Processing Zone Authority (MEPZA), Ahmed Parkar, said this is a ?good initiative. We firmly believe that it will allow the export processing zone to be more efficient.?
The one-stop shop is even more welcome as customer services should be improved. The relations with customers should be far better with a staff benefiting from more flexible hours. A customs officer who used to remain at the new container park until 4 pm will now be there until 11pm; this should help provide better service to all operators. Clients too will benefit from this reform, as they can also pay for customs duties at Dragon House.
Bert Cunningham seized the opportunity to recall the whole reform strategy undertaken within these the two past years. The first (and probably most important) goes back to eighteen months ago and concerns the import procedures at IKS building as well as at PATS aircargo at the airport. He insisted that these reforms have not always been easy to implement especially with the reluctance of some officers in the department and some of their partners. But, he said that, thanks to government?s support, the reform has taken place and is getting under way?
