Nestlé works for a better Africa
Can multinationals play a more positive role in local communities besides doing business? Nestlé is showing the way in Africa through a new partnership, it announced, with the continent. The plan was unveiled last month for the Mauritian market.
In the light of this new vision, Nestlé undertakes to raise the living standards of several communities across Africa through a range of initiatives. First, the company plans to upgrade the capacity of its African suppliers of coffee, cocoa and other raw materials. It proposes to work with producers in villages in order to improve their skills and production technologies. Better produce ensures higher incomes for suppliers.
Nestlé places a lot of emphasis on knowledge transfer to the grass roots level of production. Research and development information are disseminated to the farming communities across the continent. This is part of the multinational strategy, that is, to add value at every stage of the value chain.
Besides empowering local farmers, the vision for Africa also includes a strong component of providing some kind of innovative development aid to local communities. The initiatives are in line with the Millennium Development Goals and are aimed at combating HIV-AIDS and other widespread diseases, alleviating poverty, promoting schooling for the masses, protection of the environment and women?s empowerment.
?We believe there are tremendous development opportunities in Africa. We have a long-term commitment towards the continent. We sincerely believe in a win-win situation,? says Maya Makanjee, Communications and Public Affairs Director of Nestlé.
