French murder suspect kills himself
A French army veteran committed suicide in hospital overnight despite the presence of a police guard, bringing to an abrupt halt his trial for the murder of three young conscripts in the 1980s. Victims? families expressed shock and anger that Pierre Chanal, 56, had been able to slash a major artery in his thigh undetected, depriving them of a full hearing into the killings.
Chanal, who had also been linked to five disappearances twenty years ago, was in a hospital bed after months on hunger strike when his trial began on Tuesday. The trial had been postponed after he tried to kill himself in May. The accused denied having murdered three of the eight men who disappeared between 1980 and 1987 in northeast France.
