Egypt has detected two new human cases of the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu virus, both in a single household that raised ducks, a World Health Organisation official said yesterday. Hassan el-Bushra, regional adviser for communicable diseases surveillance at the World Health Organisation, said the two people were tested positive for the avian influenza virus.

The new infections bring the total number of human cases in Egypt to 17, of whom seven have died since the virus first surfaced in Egyptian poultry in February.

The two cases were a brother and sister from a village near the town of Zifta in Gharbiya province, about 80 km (50 miles) north of Cairo.
