Barclays Mauritius sent 150 of its employees to Ile aux Aigrettes on Saturday the 30th in the framework of the "Volunteer 2Day"project. This initiative was launched in May 2004 during their PAMOJA campaign to motivate their staff. PAMOJA is a Swahili word that means 'together we can'.

As from that moment, it was decided that each employee would benefit from two free days per year to do voluntary work. In this context, this visit was not only a way for the staff to discover endangered species of the country (especially the pigeon des mares, the crecerelle and the giant tortoise of Aldabra) but also a way for twenty of them to take part in a programme to protect endemic species.

Hence, these 20 employees undertook to clean a plot of land of all imported species to make room for endemic ones which will thus be able to grow as they should. Next 18th and 19th May, they will go to the island again to plant out species ? from cuttings in the island?s tree nursery managed by the non-governmental organisation, the Mauritius Wildlife Foundation ? on this plot of land.

This year, such activities as the Community Support project will be done under the aegis of Barclays Miles Ahead, which is a large Pan-African programme aimed at strengthening local capacities for long-term fund raising projects. The activities will focus on three main fields: environment, education and health.
