PM takes forceful stand in favour of the “forgotten”
Just as he did in his speech for the 14th summit of non-aligned countries in Cuba, the Prime minister, Navin Ramgoolam, reiterated his wish for the sovereignty of Mauritius over the Chagos to be recognised in his speech at the 61st annual meeting of heads of state and of governments at the United Nations (UN). “The archipelago was excised by the former colonial power to be used for military ends in total disregard of UN resolutions 1514 and 2066. This exercise also includes the shameful moving of the Chagossians from their native land with no regard to their fundamental rights,” he said forcefully. He did not hesitate to “ask again the United Kingdom to start a constructive dialogue with (his) government so that Mauritius can exert its sovereignty over the Chagos archipelago”. The PM seized the opportunity of this meeting to make the voices of the smaller countries heard as shown by his strong stand on the UN Security Council. He said he could not understand how Africa, South America and the Caribbean countries did not have a seat on the UN security council – or the “biggest democracy in the world”, India.
