Eight gored in dramatic Pamplona bull run
Eight people have been gored by bulls in Spain, including a local man who was impaled five times, in a frenzied dash through Pamplona yesterday in the most dramatic of bull runs.
Five people were seriously hurt, although their injuries were not life-threatening, according to the regional government.
The local man, an experienced bull runner in Pamplona, was repeatedly caught on a bull’s horns during a hair-raising pile-up of fallen runners and animals near the end of the run at the entrance to the bull ring.
His trousers and shirt were ripped to shreds while he attempted to crawl away and those around him tried in vain to distract the bull.
Earlier a bull charged around a corner, mowing down several people pinned against a fence, while further down the route a man was tossed up in the air.
A total of 18 people were injured, including a 24-year-old Frenchman and two Americans - 50-year-old Brian White, from New York and a 26-year-old man identified only as “M.S.”, from Brooklyn who was kept in hospital with a wound in his left thigh.
Four people, including a Briton and an American, were gored by bulls on Friday.
Six bulls and their accompanying steers career down the 825 metres (900 yards) of fenced-off, cobbled streets that lead to the bull ring every day for eight days during the San Fermin fiesta. That evening the bulls face a matador in the bull ring.
The centuries-old Pamplona fiesta in honour of St. Fermin draws thousands of fans from around the world for a week of frenzied late night drinking and early morning running with the bulls. Fifteen people have been killed since 1910.
