Leaving no stone unturned
The mystery in the Dantier case is getting hazier with strange suspicions. The parents of Nadine, the 20-year old girl who was raped and murdered a few metres from her home a year ago, wonder about her boyfriend, though the latter has been cleared by a DNA test. They have sworn an affidavit requesting the exhumation of the coffin. They want to read the letter that the young man wrote to Nadine and placed by her side in the coffin. The objections of the investigating team will be heard in Court on Thursday.
According to the Dantiers’ affidavit, this letter could contain material facts that would allow the investigation to go ahead. They do not want any potential evidence to be left out by the police. They may not consider Bruno Tadebois as a suspect but they want to know more about his past relationship with their dead daughter. Though he does not seem to understand such a move, he nevertheless remains serene. He asserts that he has nothing to hide and that he will not object to the exhumation “if it can shed some light upon the affair.” On the other hand, Nadine Dantier’s biological father, Gino Troubat, is said to have expressed his disagreement with the exhumation. He wants his daughter to rest in peace.
The affidavit may however lead nowhere. According to the District Intermediate Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act, an exhumation is allowed by law only if it is to lead to an autopsy. As the Dantiers have asked for the exhumation only to know the content of the coffin and do not expect any autopsy, their demand could be rejected.
Marcellin Azie’s lawyer, Rama Valayden, may take advantage of the situation. Marcellin Azie continues to claim that he is innocent. He said that he confessed the murder only because he was afraid of the police. The fact that even the Dantiers are not so sure that he is the suspect, or at least the fact that they are looking for other leads might be positive for him…
The investigation seems to have come to a standstill. The DNA tests in South Africa only revealed that there were two persons on the crime scene. And the tests have not led to the arrest of the guilty person. In Marcellin Azie’ case, he confessed to the crime with lots of details before retracting and the police have never confirmed anything concerning his DNA test.
