Titane is one of those fascinating persons who have left everything behind to start anew when they felt their lives no longer corresponded with their expectations or their inner personality. So, when one day, she came out of a seminar intended to improve her performance in her chosen field ? marketing at that time? she suddenly realised she was not meant to be a businesswoman? and she simply swapped to something closer to her personality: the arts. And she has felt much better since.

At first sight, it is hard to imagine that Titane was a serious marketing executive for several years. She has that charisma and warmth of artists who do not take themselves too seriously. When she was just four years old, she decided that ?Anne? ? her real name ? was far too heavy to carry. So she would just not answer anyone who called her ?Anne?as she thought Titane corresponded better to her personality. ?So, at the age of 4, my parents and teachers did not have any other choice than to call me by the name I had chosen,? she says with a broad smile.

Now, she loves painting and enjoys drawing cartoons ? so this is just what she has been doing everyday since 1997 when she moved from Belgium to New-Zealand to resume her studies in illustration and cartooning. ?When I realised I was not really happy in my job, I felt I could not remain in Belgium where the atmosphere was not inspiring for me. I needed a place where it was not too cold and where people did not see me in Chanel style everyday. So I moved to New-Zealand.?

New lifestyle

Just to make sure you do not get lost in Titane?s life, it shoud be pointed out that she was born in Morocco, grew up in Belgium, moved to New Zealand and Australia to finally end up on Mauritian shores with her husband and two little children. ?I was looking for a quiet and simple country to live in. As my husband is an artist as well ? a musician ? we both agree on the fact that we want to live a simple life in a beautiful place. So Mauritius appeared perfect for us.? And she asserts that, though she still has to adapt to her new lifestyle, she is ?very, very happy to be here?.

The couple had heard about Mauritius through Titane?s cousin who is a pilot based here and they had thought that some time they could come and settle here. ?But then, one day I was praying and it became clear that we had to move to Mauritius. And strangely enough, when I told my husband, he just said ?Okay, let?s go!? And here we are?, she says happily.

No blind believer

Yes, Titane has strong faith in God and she prays. But, instead of being one of those blind believers who just go to church and forget about all the precepts as soon as they get home, she has decided to bring her own contribution to society. Her cartoons, ?God?s stuff?, do not only force her to get informed about the Bible but are also aimed at sharing this knowledge with other people. ?With these cartoons, of course, I want to make people laugh, but, above all, I want them to learn something about the Bible while not being bored.?

But she makes it clear that, although her cartoons are aimed at being funny, they never criticise God or religion. ?I always keep a positive approach so that both believers and non-believers can appreciate my work.?

After collaborating with three newspapers in Australia, among which a major one ? the Sunday Times ? and winning the second prize in an international competition in the United States, Comics 35 (and some others for her painting which is her passion) ? she has decided to unpack her suitcases in Mauritius ?for the long term?. Besides contributing to l?express outlook every week, she would like to publish a first book with her comics and exhibit her paintings. Through all this, she hopes that she and her family will bring something different and positive to Mauritian society.
