?We want young women entrepreneurs to leave the routine and join our network?
● As new PRO of the ?Association mauricienne des femmes chefs d?entreprises? (AMFCE), how you see the association and your own position?
The association for women entrepreneurs is aimed at creating a partnership with other women in our sector and learning about new activities. The objective is to bring a maximum number of women entrepreneurs together, to know each other and share their difficulties regardless of the size of their businesses and help the young generation of women entrepreneurs. We want them to leave the routine and join our network of para-work activities. It?s a kind of mentoring. As says the motto of the organization: ?Alone we are invisible but together we are invincible?.
● You are also director of CQ Tech, how did you start in the security industry?
We already had a structure in Reunion Island. The stakeholders, with whom we are working, wanted to expand in the Indian Ocean. Thirteen years ago, we came to Mauritius with the same objective. At first, it was only for a period of 2 years - time to set up the structure with local partners so that it could easily be taken over afterwards. But taking into consideration the amount of work here, we could not leave such an important market. It?s also because of the quality of life here that we have decided to stay. We started with a small team and today our activities and our staff have increased and we consider ourseleves as leaders. And I see Mauritius as my country.
● What do you think of security in Mauritius?
We are in a pleasant island and we are very conscious of the important tourist activities in the island. We have to attract tourists, IRS buyers and foreign investors. For these people to invest money and settle here with their families, they need to feel secure. We must improve the security in the country. The government needs to set proper measures and tighten the laws. There is also need for proper understanding between the competitors in the security sector. Like all professionals, we need an association, which will bring us together to think about some global strategies with an idea of social responsibility. We are happy that the ministry of Tourism has called upon us to think about security in the tourist sector. We have to sensitize people that, instead of using archaic methods, they must seek for professionalism. We must come with a global security for the country. But the situation is not so alarming. We just need to be more prudent now.
● How does it feel to head a security company?
It is very interesting as we are respected. It is also because of teamwork in a sector usually considered as macho. But security concerns women a lot. Being in such a position, I would like to do something for women. My perspectives differ from those of my male colleagues and I bring my personal touch to make things more user-friendly. It is using the synergy and making things happen. We must have strength and persuasive power when we are professionals.
● What do you think of the progress made by women entrepreneurs in Mauritius?
Women in Mauritius have always been active and the progress made is enormous. How to manage their personal and professional lives has always been in their mindset though they were not entrepreneurs before. Today they are more established and their number has increased. There?s real women?s emancipation. And this has required lots of support from husbands who are now more understanding, supportive and proud of their wives. The Mauritian society is evolving.
● What have been the reasons behind your success?
Mauritius was a challenge for me. I have a French educational background, being born in Madagascar from Indian origin and being a Muslim. I understand Mauritius and I have adapted easily. The European norms and standards that I have maintained and the fact of being culturally Indian have helped me a lot. Here, women are respected. Behind my success, there?s also a lot of work, a lot of time invested, working irregular hours and being flexible while respecting deadlines. A women needs to put double effort to assert herself as a professional. I have a young team and it?s great to see that, when you succeed, you drag those who are with you to success. My husband also has been very supportive. Today, with a baby, it has helped me a lot to be able to take part in my para-work activities.
● What would you say to encourage women who want to get into entrepreneurship?
They need to invest a lot of work and perseverance and they must join the AMFCE!
