Water shortage highlights national crisis
The protests in Palma last Tuesday were a sign of a major difficulty that many people have been facing recently: water shortage. Even though this situation is a real nuisance for all consumers, the authorities admit they don’t have any control over it, as the water levels in many reservoirs are below average.
Hence, Palma is far from being the only area where there is a lack of water. People from other regions of Quatre-Bornes – like Sodnac – as well as distant villages such as St Pierre or Le Morne suffer from the same problem. The Central Water Authority had actually set up a strict programme of water cuts but technical problems at the last minute led some regions to be more affected by water shortage than initially thought.
A number of specific problems on the network led to one station being used to help other regions and has finally produced a situation where there is an overall lack of water at national level.
Although this problem appears inevitable for the moment, the authorities concerned should work on a programme that would enable our water tanks to be full at all times. As the Water Resource Unit pointed out in a presentation two weeks ago, this problem is partly due to the topography of the island and the difficulty of retaining rainwater. But the institution also revealed that the problem comes from leaks in water pipes that have not been eliminated… The CWA is thinking of investing in that direction; this could be a first step towards a solution to the problem.
