«Ma femme pense que mon amie veut me séduire»

«My wife wants to end our marriage»

I am in a desperate situation. My name is K and I am married to V. We have one son who is eight years old. It seems that my wife wants to end our marriage. She has not said anything definite yet but I guess it by her attitude towards me. She has changed a lot over the past couple of months and it has been a painful period for me. Recently when I asked her if she loves me, she says «I do but not like before» or sometimes «not as much as before». At other times, she says, «I want my life to be different» but she does not enlarge on that statement. I can see that something is bothering her but she will not confide in me. I love her as much as before. There are a number of times when maybe I have not been as nice as I should have been towards her and she has told me as such. But now she is saying a lot more things that I never did. I can assure you that I have tried to change the way I behave. For me, my son and her are the most important people in my life and I tell her that very often. How can I get her to change her mind? I hope that you will help me, thank you.

I know that you are doing practically everything to regain the love of your wife. Unfortunately as the saying goes : ? It takes two to tango?. I mean that if you are the only one who is going to make all the efforts and your wife none, it is likely to be an uphill struggle with little hope of achieving something.

Though she has not said that she intends to leave you but you feel that this could the case judging by her attitude and some of the things that she says from time to time. Of course, your assumptions could be correct but if you are determined to make her change her mind, you need to decide on a line of action.

You have made a good start by recognizing the errors of your ways but to her that is simply not enough. You need to prove that you are changing for the better and in a permanent way. Making empty promises or going back to your old habits are sure ways to lead to an eventual split.

You might feel that your wife is being unfair towards you by accusing you of things that you did not do but in her mind, she genuinely feels that you have hurt her and she still feels bad about it. For you to have any chance to save your marriage, you need to have a meaningful conversation about the way forward.

It might need a lot of soul searching but if you are both willing and determined, the odds are that you will have a good chance to save your marriage. You must try to create an environment where she will feel that she wants to be with you.

You must also consider the option of looking for professional help if you are not successful in your efforts. If you can find a way to salvage your marriage, it will mean a lot of hard work. After all, no one goes into a marriage thinking that it will not last and that he or she will become part of the ever increasing divorce statistics. Unfortunately I must also tell you that you must be realistic, if your wife no longer feels that she loves you and that she wants out of the marriage, there is very little that you can do.

For a couple to work, both must be prepared to put their shoulders to the wheel and if one is reluctant, the move will only be backwards. I am afraid to tell you that there is no magic solution to make it better.

Everyone has the right to decide whether he/she wishes to stay in a relationship. It is no good trying to force her because that will not stop the inevitable eventually.

If she feels that she cannot stay in the relationship, anything you say will only make her more determined to call it a day. If that is the case, you must think of yourself because immaterial of her reasons for wanting to end of the marriage; do you want to stay in an unhappy relationship and the chances of your wife resenting you more day by day? She is dissatisfied with her life with you.

You must let go if that is what she wants. At this stage, you must get you priorities right, you need to think of the well being of your son. You must do your best to cushion the blow. Despite your differences, you must continue to be a responsible parent and ensure that your son suffers the least from the situation.
