Jaya Craft could be the typical example of a small handicraft enterprise geared to grow. It has already started by exporting its soft toys and decorations for children’s rooms.

Yet, when the company was set up, the Toolsee family didn’t think it would be subject to such developments. Seema used to make toys as a hobby to offer them as presents to her family. But, as her friends never stopped telling her how nice her presents were, she listened to their encouragements and finally set up the business.

“The craft market at Caudan Waterfront was a golden opportunity to exhibit my products and make them known to both tourists and Mauritians.” The sega dancers, crabs, turtles and all the other objects are displayed on a table on the first floor of the craft market. The toys and decorations all have the same theme: Mauritius. Jaya Craft tries to design toys that remind people of Mauritius. They also play a lot on bright colours. “Our field is children and, with all these means, we try to attract their attention.”

She insists on the safety of her products. “As we specialise in products for kids, we’re very much aware of safety. The fact that we export our products to Reunion – and previously to France – also shows that we abide by international norms.” All the toys are made with cotton, which is a washable material.

These items are said to be appreciated both by Mauritians and tourists. The latter can buy the toys as a souvenir of their trip. In Mauritius, the company works with many pre-primary schools; they manufacture educational toys like clocks used in classes.

“Mauritians like our products because they are unique. All the toys come from our imagination and we don’t work on an industrial basis. All the models are done in around fifty pieces only.” Moreover, as the whole production process is done by hand, this doesn’t allow production on a large scale – some hundred pieces every month.

“Our handicraft is the proof that a company can develop even if it doesn’t have huge financial means. First, the work has to be well organised in terms of raw materials, delivery… Then, Jaya Craft is also a living proof of the saying, ‘when there’s a will, there’s a way.’”
