Teacher poisoned by 11 year-olds
It could come from a funny story for children. At first sight, it could even look funny to adults. But when it is no longer a story and becomes harsh reality, there is reason for concern. A few CPE pupils poisoned their teacher in school with a mixture of medicines which could have had dramatic consequences.
Jean-Claude Bontemps was poisoned by his own pupils of the primary school where he teaches in Port-Louis. Five girls and a boy put some medicine into the sandwich and the bottle of soda, which he had left on his table to go to the toilets for a few minutes. He made a statement to the police after he realised what had happened.
On Friday 15th September, the teacher felt itching on his neck and later realised he had swellings on this part of his body. He left school at about 3.30 pm to see a doctor who revealed he had been poisoned by a toxic product. As he felt better after taking the medicines the doctor had prescribed him, he went back to school on Monday…
<B>Recalcitrant to discipline</B>
This is when he obtained astonishing revelations by other pupils. “I couldn’t believe it,” he says when the three kids told him that the poisoning was done as a “joke” by some students. Very surprised by such revelations, he decided to go through the kids’ clothes and bags to see whether they had such products in their possession… And he indeed found crushed tablets in the bags of each of the pupils suspected.
With hindsight, the teacher realised that these children were “hard cases” and were quite recalcitrant to his requests for discipline. “I had warned them that I would call their parents for a meeting. I suppose this is why they decided to take action,” suggested Jean-Claude Bontemps.
But the case will not stop here. After the school principal was informed of the incident, she immediately took the case to the Child Protection Unit to seek advice. Moreover, the teacher’s statement to the police will certainly have other consequences and the children concerned should be questioned in the coming days. The case is far too serious to give in to sentiment and allow these children to go on with their lives as if nothing had happened. If they are old enough to commit such a crime, they should be old enough to pay the consequences as well.
