Review of the week
● HEAD OF RDA RESIGNS. Goolam Moreea has left his post as head of the Road Development Authority (RDA). He has asked the ministry of Public Infrastructure not to renew his contract due to end on 15th August 2007. His departure coincides with the suspension of planned works to replace the Caudan roundabout with traffic lights as well as the controversy on the Macondé Bridge. However, both Goolam Moreea and minister Rashid Beebeejaun have denied that he has been forced to resign following the controversy on those two projects. The minister has confirmed that Goolam Moreea has mentioned "personal reasons" to justify his resignation.
● MP VARMA TAKES LEAVE FROM ICAC. Yatin Varma has temporarily resigned from the parliamentary committee of the Independent Commission against Corruption (Icac). His decision follows a controversy over the fact that he proposed his services as legal adviser to para-statal bodies under a ministry. Anil Gayan wrote a letter to the Icac stating that Yatin Varma was "using his office for gratification". Yatin Varma has decided to resign until the end of the enquiry but Anil Gayan regrets that he has waited so long before taking this decision.● RESTORING ORDER IN SCRAP METAL. The government sorts out the illegal business of scrap metal. The Consumer Protection (Scrap Metal) Regulations 2007 were adopted for a better control of the market. Following recommendations of a committee chaired by minister Duval, it was decided that exports of scrap metal would go on . However, all exporters must get a permit from the MRA. Control will also be more severe at customs. The carriers will need a permit from the permanent secretary. Those contravening the law will have more severe penalties ? from a Rs 100,000 fine to three years? imprisonment. The police will reinforce its patrols to avoid thefts.
