Review of the week
● Food crisis worries government and opposition. Food crisis is a major concern in Mauritius as elsewhere. Matters came to a head when opposition leader Paul Bérenger asked Agro-industry minister to explain steps that were being taken by government to counter the impending food catastrophe. Highly-dependent on import Mauritius will still have to import over 60% of its food items but land is being released to planters so that Mauritius can become self-sufficient in fresh vegetables and produce as much meat as possible to feed its population.
● Upcoming PRB report raises expectations. Reports say government might increase civil servants? salaries by some 25% in the next Pay Research Bureau (PRB) report, due by end of May. News (unconfirmed so far) that heartens workers but worries economists. Too much cash injected in the market might worsen our already worryingly high inflation rate. Speculations are rife regarding what the private sector will do to match the government?s generosity.
● SADC conference on poverty opens today. Southern African Development Community (SADC) conference on poverty opens today at Pailles. Heads of states and governments of the 14 SADC members will attend as well as key ministers and actors from the private sector and other stakeholders. Among guests, will be South African president and Norwegian Prime minister. The conference ends on Saturday.
