Shooting erupted between rebels and government soldiers in a suburb of Liberia's capital Monrovia yesterday as rebel leader Sekou Conneh visited the city. West African peacekeepers under UN command were trying to restore order. Residents said it appeared that Conneh himself had been able to escape from the gunfire in the Paynseville suburb.

Witnesses said the trouble began when civilians started throwing stones at Conneh's convoy as he headed towards a meeting with caretaker President Moses Blah.

It was the worst clash in Monrovia since order was restored after pariah leader Charles Taylor flew into exile in August. It was Conneh's first visit to Monrovia since the latest bout of civil war in the West African country blew up more than three years ago.

The clashes flared on the same day the United Nations took command of the regional peacekeepers sent to try to end nearly 14 years of non-stop violence.
