<B>Road accident kills one</B>

The road made one more victim last week. Sunil Kowlessur was killed in a crash involving a van and a bus in Quartier-Militaire. Witnesses said the van taking nine Transinvest workers to St-Pierre was trying to overtake a bus when he collided with another bus coming from the opposite direction. The violence of the impact caused some passengers of the van to be thrown on the road. Chinadoo Mamode is admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of North Hospital in Pamplemousses.

<B>Judicial inquiry in Bassin-Blanc tragedy</B>

The mystery of the Bassin-Blanc tragedy where the bodies of the two lovers, Tagoresingh Sandoram and Anshi Ittoo, were found could be unveiled. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has ordered a judicial inquiry to be held at Souillac district court very soon. The investigators have so far not agreed on one version. Some think that the lovers were murdered while others are convinced that they committed suicide. After the inquiry, the magistrate will submit his conclusions and all related documents to the DPP. The latter will then decide if the case demands further police investigation.

<B>Appointment of heads starts…</B>

The Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) is one of the first parastatal bodies that can pride itself on having new heads. Bijaye Madhou has been appointed director while Fareed Jangeerkhan has become the board chairman of the institution. After being head of news and documentaries at the MBC between 1975 and 1984, Bijaye Madhou was general director between 1995 and 1996. The new chairman was a cameraman at the MBC at a certain point in time. Both seem motivated to take up the challenge and the director has announced his will to implement digital television during his mandate.

<B>Battered man victim of parricide</B>

Laval Ramsamy died following a violent dispute with his 14-year old son. But was his death due to the blow given by his son or caused by an accidental fall, as stated by his wife? This is the question the police will have to answer after their investigation. Meanwhile, Laval’s son is detained at the Correctional Youth Centre. The forensic scientist, Dr Satish Boolell, said that only one blow was given to Laval, which made him fall and caused much damage. Neighbours and relatives say that Laval was a quiet and peaceful man, who was battered at home. As for his wife, she says that her family and herself often had to bear her husband when he came back home drunk.
