<B>IMF speaks highly of Mauritius</B>
The latest report from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) entitled “Mauritius – challenges of sustained growth” – must appear comforting these days. While the main sectors of the Mauritian economy seem to be in a bad position, the IMF salutes the country for its “great economic performance since independence.” It is confident that Mauritius has the capacity to fight challenges ahead. Economic stability the opening of the country to international trade, strong institutional structures and political stability are some characteristics of the country, which explain this success. Deficit and public debt remain, however, preoccupying and should be addressed if Mauritius wants to ride over the challenges of globalisation.
Nature Watch: never give up</B>
The government has clearly stated that it will go ahead with the South Eastern highway project – thus devastating a whole portion of one of the last green areas of the island – but Nature Watch is prepared to continue the fight. The non-governmental organisation is calling upon the public to join a peaceful procession at noon next Thursday. It will start at St Louis cathedral and Alvin Brigemohun, the president, has asked all participants to wear something green.
<B>Disaster averted</B>
It could have been worse. No human losses. The collision between MSC Katie and the NordSun has “only” caused material damage. The NordSun didn’t suffer that much while MSC Katie had to be run aground at Bain-des-Dames to prevent it from sinking. Its hull was totally destroyed when the Nord Sun struck it in the harbour. MSC Katie was trying to leave the harbour after disembarking its goods while the Nordsun was just arriving when the crash occurred.
<B>Spiritual park at sacred lake</B>
Grand-Bassin will be equipped with a spiritual park, for which Rs 1 million has been allocated in the last budget. Last Sunday, the PM, Paul Bérenger, and the DPM, Pravind Jugnauth, were both at Ganga talao (the sacred lake) for the laying of the foundation stone. The project’s promoter, the Hindu House, asserts that the many pilgrims who go there to look for mental peace will be more than happy with this new place of prayer where the atmosphere will give serenity, calm and harmony.
