PM promises better days on Divali night
Divali is one of the rare festivals that make all Mauritians feel involved. The ?light festival? is definitely one of the few occasions when Mauritians of all faiths and cultures want to take part in the celebrations. The prime minister, Navin Ramgoolam, is aware of this and seized the opportunity to call for more unity to face the challenges ahead.
?I can guarantee that, with your support, the country will be back on the rails of growth and prosperity. After the sacrifice, there will be light,? he said while ?touring? constituencies 5 and 9. As has been the case every year since 1992, Navin Ramgoolam was the guest of honour in Divali celebrations at Bon-Accueil where the village council reiterated its full support to the prime minister. Then, he went on to two other ceremonies in his own constituency, Triolet.
There were not so many people as usual ? maybe because of the morose atmosphere prevailing at the moment. The daily life of Mauritians is becoming difficult and they can?t see brighter days ahead. They might just not be in a mood for festivities. Among those present, some even seized the opportunity of seeing the PM face to face to throw their frustrations at him.
While Navin Ramgoolam was making his speech in Triolet, a person in the crowd claimed, ?We are tramps too.? But, as if he were prepared to face signs of hostility, the prime minister quietly replied, ?When you are a tramp, there is no point in merely talking about it. You have nothing without effort and sacrifice.?
As if to show that sacrifice is worth the effort, he explained that some efforts made are already showing results. ?Three months only after the presentation of the budget, we can see tangible signs of progress.? This is why he asked the population to be patient and to make some sacrifices.
Divali was also the occasion for the Prime minister to preach more unity. ?National unity should not only be a slogan.? The solidarity shown every year on the occasion of Divali should be inspiring for all other days. As the PM pointed out, Mauritius is seen as a haven of peace and each citizen should make sure that this continues to be the case?
