Pertinent issue of more examinable subjects at school
The burning issue of more examinable subjects at primary level is in contradiction with the fact that there is a process of deloading the curriculum at primary level. Sometimes back, it was stated that ranking and tough competition were dehumanizing the children. Today the situation has not changed. Though ranking has been abolished, there is a tendency of imposing more examinable subjects on children.
It is interesting here to cite Katarina Tomasevski, special reporter of UN Human Rights Commission on Education. She criticizes the British system of Education which is imposing a system of exams which is ignoring the needs of children. She refers to Article 29 of UN Convention of Children?s Rights, where it is stated that ?Education must favour the development of the personality of the child and the development of his skills and his physical and mental aptitudes to the maximum of his potentiality?.
She also emphasizes that education must be in the interest of the child and this is not so.
To conclude, the words of Mr Silvio de France Montalban, Minister of Education of Nicaragua are worth to be remembered.
?If we don?t know what type of Education we wish nor what type of Economic Development we are heading towards, then we can?t evoke the concept of Quality of Education.?
