Malawi. Delayed elections start in poverty-stricken state
Candidates in sombre suits queued with barefoot peasants in Malawi on Thursday as delayed presidential and parliamentary elections in one of the world?s poorest countries got under way. Voters will choose a president to replace Bakili Muluzi, who is stepping down after being thwarted in his bid to stand for a third five-year term that would have been unconstitutional. His hand-picked successor, Bingu wa Mutharika, patiently stood in a long queue in the countryside south of Blantyre with raggedly clothed and barefoot peasants. Mutharika, who is carrying the banner of the ruling United Democratic Front, told journalists that improving the area?s roads would be his first priority.
