Music is the art by which a composer, through a performer as intermediary, communicates to a listener ideas, feelings, or states of mind. It combines sounds of voices or instruments to achieve beauty of form and expression of emotion. Music can be considered as one of the oldest arts. People most probably started singing as soon as language developed. Music knows no linguistic barriers since it can be appreciated by anyone anywhere. It is a universal language, that shows the rich diversity of human experience across cultures.

With its special ability to express feelings and emotions, music is the language of the heart. It stirs the abode of emotions, relaxes the agitated mind, communicates the incommunicable, bringslight to a heart of darkness or generates a ‘lovequake’. According to William Congreve:“Music hath charms to soothe a savage breast; To soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak.”

Music connects people, unveils hidden emotions and shows the beauty of truth. Some tunes remain forever in our minds and remind us of particular moments in our lives.“Music vibrates in our memory”, says Shelley. The local slaves sang the sega to express their miseries. As much as music can express emotions, it can also alter them. Listening to soft music as you drive can diminish road rage.

Music is also a great teaching tool in pre-primary school. Children learn better in a friendly and light atmosphere. Music can create that atmosphere conducive to learning. Singing and dancing to an upbeat song help the child develop self-esteem and his personality.

Music also has healing powers. It helps patients suffering from several illnesses. Music has the power to help patients with language disorders or impairment after a stroke or head trauma, with senile dementia. Music in a play helps create appropriate tragic or comic effects. Opera combines singing and orchestra music with drama. Ballet and other forms of dancing need music to help the dancers with their steps.

Music is life and omnipresent in the life of a person. From schools, workplaces, homes, religious places, hospitals, stadiums, supermarkets to nightclubs, music plays a vital role. One can hardly imagine a world without it - it would be so dull and monotonous. Music is simply magical. It brings joy and vitality to our life.
