?I?ve not adapted to the fact of early closing here?
Jesal Mertia Sales and Marketing Officer</B>
I have been in Mauritius for about two years. Mauritius is very nice. It?s quiet, peaceful and I really feel relaxed here. I don?t find any big cultural differences in Mauritius compared to my country. The food and the festivals are almost the same. One thing, which I have not adapted to, however, is that everything closes early. Even the restaurants and the banks! People have to take permission during working hours to do their banking and it?s a loss of productive time. Shops and banks must be open till late to offer greater facilities to working people. Even the work culture is different. People seem to stick to the 9 to 4 working hours. People are rushing to go home early. For me, it?s a bit strange.
People here have an ?I really-don?t-care? attitude and they must really change it. The main problem is the language. When you talking with Mauritians, they often forget about you and switch back to Creole. Mauritius is undergoing lots of growths in the IT sector and the tourism sector. There are also so many foreigners who are coming to work here and I think it?s a really good thing. There is a shortage of qualified people here. The young people are happy with their HSC only and they are seizing job opportunities in the BPO sector. It?s true that they are having a good salary but nothing beats having a good education. Here, being unemployed is not considered as a social stigma and finding a job is not so difficult.
In Mauritius, you can easily change career and adapt easily. The youngsters must take advantage of the educational facilities, which the government is offering, to find better jobs. It will be beneficial both for them and for the economic growth. The greatest thing about Mauritius is the leisure activities. You have many activities that you can do especially during weekends. The only thing is that shops must be open on Sundays and on holidays. But there are more good things than bad ones here!
