First, why are you being asked to make the speech? Are you knowledgeable on the subject? What are the expectations of the organisers and the audien-ce? If you cannot meet those expectations, would it be better for someone else to do it?

Second, know your audience. How large is it? What mix of people will there be? Are they hostile or welcoming? How much does the audience know about your subject?

Third, know your environment. Where will you be spea-king ? Is the venue small or large ? will you need a microphone? Is there a lectern? If you need visual aids, is equipment available? How long should you speak? Will you have to answer questions?

We might all be asked to make a speech at some time in our lives, at a wedding or other family occasion, in a meeting, for an office presentation. No matter what it is, the more we avoid it, the more frightening it becomes. But if we face up to that fear, prepare and practise, it is suddenly not so frightening after all.

Toastmasters International is a friendly, supportive environment for people who want to practise speaking in front of an audience. Join us for our next meeting: Seminar Room, IVTB House, Phoenix.

Monday 26 July at 19.15 for 19.30.
