Right knowledge and relevant skills are not sufficient to make a person become “fully human” because these two are morally and spiritually neutral in that they can be used either for good or bad purposes. For our education to be holistic so as to lead someone towards “human excellence”, it should be backed by human values, noble ideals and healthy attitudes.

A five-point agenda for our school morning assembly was suggested in l’express-outlook in its issue of Tuesday 10th October 2006. If this agenda is put into practice, with full dedication, it will be a first step towards human excellence as follows:

Silent sitting/silent standing/or meditation will draw out the value of peacefulness and develop the affective self with its potential of equipoise.

Universal non-sectarian prayer will draw out the value of lovefulness and develop the psychic self with its potential of enthusiasm.

Quotations/proverbs/sayings will draw out the value of truthfulness and develop the cognitive self with its potential of equity.

Educational advice and spiritual instructions will draw out the value of righteousness and develop the behavioural self with its potential of efficiency.

National anthem/human value songs will draw out the value of respectfulness and develop the spiritual self with its potential of empathy.

To help our youngsters achieve human excellence, our teachers and our leaders of religious-cultural organisations should be properly trained and educated to enable them to redefine education not only as instruction and information but also as formation, reformation and transformation. Education will only have a holistic approach when the five basic human values are drawn out while developing the five aspects of the self with its five potentials so that character-building is guaranteed.

To conclude, it can be said that building of character is synonymous with attaining human excellence in that the person is being guided in the dynamic process of learning to be peaceful, loveful, truthful, rightful and respectful.

In such a process, the five basic human values of peacefulness, lovefulness, truthfulness, righteousness and respectfulness are involved to make the person fully human.
