After ten days of fasting and sleeping on ground mats, crowds of devout people march in procession to various kovils to celebrate Thaipussam Cavadee in honour of Lord Muruga or Kartikeya, son of Lord Shiva.

The pilgrims carry cavadees, beautiful structures made of bamboo, leaves and flowers and laden with lemons, shaktivels and coconuts or milk. Many have silver needles stuck in their tongues, cheeks or torso. Others have their lips sown by needles to stay silent.

They made promises to God and asked for blessings. As soon as they reach the kovil and pour the milk on the statue, they can talk again and eat a vegetarian meal.
