On l?avait enterré un peu trop vite après sa défaite dans The Ladbrokes Africa Cup. Hinterland, outsider hier à 6/1, a mis à genoux ses adversaires en réussissant une course phénoménale. À l?arrivée, il a fait exploser le record du 1 600m de près d?une seconde. Avec un chrono de 1.35.76s, il a effacé le nom de Johny B Goode des tablettes des records. Ce dernier avait réalisé 1.36.70s dans la Coupe d?Or 2002.

Le Barbé a tenu toutes ses promesses, même si Hinterland n?a été inquiété que dans les derniers mètres par Rhythmically. En imprimant un train d?enfer à la course dès le départ, le fils de Badger Land n?a, tout simplement, laissé aucune chance à ses adversaires, même si dans les derniers 50 mètres, il a commencé à faiblir. Mais c?était trop tard, car la course était déjà gagnée. Avec des temps séquentiels à couper le souffle, (les premiers 1 000 mètres furent bouclés en 59.56s !), on pensait que la course allait finalement revenir à un finisher, mais au 400m, Hinterland trouva moyen de nous offrir une seconde accélération. Un nouveau coup de rein qui a mis ses adversaires K.-O, car à l?arrière, à l?exception de Rhythmically, aucun de ses six autres concurrents, dont le favori World Focus, ne fit la moindre impression. En ligne droite, Hinterland ne donna aucun signe de fatigue, et, malgré le finish de Rhythmically, le champion de l?écurie Gujadhur n?eut aucune peine à franchir la ligne d?arrivée en grand vainqueur.

Ses adversaires atomisés

Hinterland, qui courait, hier, sans un tongue-tie, équipement avec lequel il avait essuyé une sévère défaite après sa Duchesse victorieuse, est venu prouver pourquoi il était si highly rated by the press il y a quelques semaines, et ce n?est pas son entraîneur Ramapatee Gujadhur qui nous dira le contraire. Ses puissantes foulées en descente et sa seconde accélération qui a atomisé le champ ont ébloui le Champ-de-Mars. Nos plus vives félicitations vont à tout l?entourage de l?écurie Gujadhur, en particulier l?entraîneur Ramapatee, le Stable Manager Gunness (Mica), son assistant-entraîneur Santosh, son palefrenier Naresh Comaloosur et son jockey François Herholdt. Ce dernier n?a pas commis la même erreur que la dernière fois et a laissé partir volontairement Hinterland au départ.

Si Hinterland a prouvé une nouvelle fois sa très grande valeur, Rhythmically, lui, nous a donné la preuve qu?il retrouve son meilleur niveau alors que le troisième, Royal Deed, l?ex-champion de l?écurie Philippe Henry, s?est battu courageusement sur un parcours qui n?est pas le sien. En revanche, World Focus, qui a été ?boxed? jusqu?au tournant et Clifton King, deux prétendants sérieux, ont été décevants. Ils ont réalisé, tous deux, une de leurs plus mauvaises courses à Maurice.

Tout comme ce fut le cas à l?occasion de la journée de la Duchesse, l?écurie Gujadhur, ?pisso? lors des trois journées précédentes, a été de la fête. Le réveil a donc été brutal mais ô combien agréable. Outre Hinterland, l?écurie Gujadhur a brillé de mille feux avec le nouveau War Council et avec le toujours courageux Los Negros. War Council a justifié sa cote de favori pour l?emporter à ses débuts dans la 3e course en profitant du manque de vigueur de Neisius sur Forest Flag (voir plus loin) alors que Los Negros a résisté de justesse au favori Dandy Rouge dans le sprint de la C2. Il est parti en tête, mais Herholdt a dû se battre pour résister à Dandy Rouge, qui a eu, pourtant, une course en or sur les barres en 3e position.

Doublé de Joorawon et Mahess Ramdin

Herholdt et l?écurie Gujadhur auraient pu signer leur quatrième victoire de la journée. Malheureusement pour eux, le but est arrivé trop tôt pour Matthews Own dans le 2 000m de la C4. Cette épreuve a été remportée de justesse par le favori, Bullfighter. Si ce dernier a signé sa première victoire à Maurice, il a offert un beau doublé à l?écurie Mahess Ramdin et au jockey Rai Joorawon, hier. Car, dans la deuxième course, ce tandem a signé une belle victoire avec Spinning Honor. Malgré ses 59 kg, Spinning Honor a marqué plusieurs longueurs sur ses concurrents en descente pour signer un start to finish.

L?écurie Allet et le jockey Jean-Roland Boutanive poursuivent, quant à eux, leur petit bonhomme de chemin. Après Sir Winston la semaine dernière, ils ont frappé, une nouvelle fois, dans l?épreuve d?ouverture avec Moon Rhapsody, lequel a surmonté avec aisance le handicap de sa mauvaise ligne pour l?emporter au finish.

Finbar Finnegan a répondu encore une fois présent pour sauver l?honneur de l?écurie Gilbert Rousset. En prenant ses distances au 800m dans la 6e course, il s?est imposé devant Seeking The Gold alors que Razor Boy, lui, n?a jamais été rejoint une fois placé en tête par Jeffrey Lloyd dans l?épreuve de clôture. Dans cette épreuve, François Herholdt a été désarçonné par sa monture, Kariba Song, au 2 400m, mais heureusement il est sorti indemne de cet incident. Sous le coup de l?émotion ? car cela aurait pu être grave si Kariba Song s?était retrouvé parmi les meneurs ? François Herholdt s?est jeté dans les bras de son épouse à son retour au paddock.

MARK NEISIUS SUR FOREST FLAG

Un mois de suspension et Rs 50 000 d?amende

Le jockey de l?écurie Serge Henry, Mark Neisius, a écopé hier, au terme de la journée, d?une suspension d?un mois et d?une amende de Rs 50 000. Il a été trouvé coupable par les Racing Stewards, sous la section 158 (2) des Rules of Racing, de n?avoir pas monté le cheval Forest Flag avec sa vigueur habituelle dans la ligne droite. Forest Flag a été battu au poteau par le favori War Council. Lors de l?enquête, Mark Neisius a plaidé coupable, mais, dans un long exposé, il a promis, entre autres, qu?on ne le reverra plus monter une course semblable à l?avenir. Il a admis que sa monte ?looks bad? quand il a vu le ?replay? à la télévision.

? Race 1 - The Great Gusto Plate

At the start Intsu threw its head up and highstakes was slow away, both horses losing about one length. Shortly after the 1300 metres, Moon Rhapsody started to race very fiercely and threw its head up when being settled off the heels of Overland Express. At the 800 metres Power Block clipped the heels of Blue Tutu and stumbled badly. From the 400 metres Intsu and Highstakes raced wide, resulting in both horses turning into the final straight very wide. Approaching the 100 metres West Bank was taken off the heels of Blue Tutu in order to obtain a clear run. Apprentice Leung accidentally dropped his whip near the 100 metres. Apprentice Rama reported that Blue Tutu raced fiercely throughout and was difficult to control.

? Race 2 - The Pacific Ocean Cup

At the start National Game was slow out, losing about one length. From 350 to the 300 metres, Be A Sport and Judge Macoboy, which was following, were held up for a run behind National Game. At approximately the 50 metres Judge Macoboy was taken in by Thunder Dust and had to be steadied off the heels of National Game.

? Race 3 - The City of Port-Louis Cup

Approaching the 1000 metres, when the pace slowed, Road Rover started to race fiercely and had to be taken out off the heels of Ebony and Double Lock, and in doing so, carried War Council, which was racing on its outside, wider, resulting in the latter having to be eased and taken in. From the 400 to the 300 metres, War Council was held up for a run behind Ebony. Approaching the 100 metres Double lock shifted out, resulting in War Council being slightly inconvenienced and having to be taken out in order to obtain a clear run. Jockey Emamdee was shown the video of the incident and told to straighten his mounts when they shift ground. In the final straight Road Rover shifted out badly, placing its rider at a disadvantage to assist his mount properly. At an inquiry into the running and riding of Forest Flag, jockey Neisius was found guilty of a charge under Rule 158 (2) for not riding his mount with his usual vigour in the final straight, thus not giving it full opportunity to win the race. He was suspended from riding in races for one month and fined Rs. 50 000.

? Race 4 - The Camille L. Nairac Cup

At the start Deliberation threw its head up, was slow out, losing about one length.

? Race 5 - The Rainbow Insurance Barbe Cup

At the start Stud Master was slow out, losing about one lenght. Entering the final straight, Rhythmically was taken in off the heels of Fashion Editor in order to obtain a clear run.

? Race 6 - The Rene Maigrot Cup

Shortly after the 1300 metres Kendo started to race fiercely, when being settled, threw its head up, shifted out taking Natures Brew, which was racing on its outside, wider. At an inquiry into an incident, it was established that passing the 1200 metres Casual Guy shied away from Natures Brew, resulting in National Lore becoming cramped for room and having to be taken in. Boomerang, which was following, was badly inconvenienced and had to be checked, losing its position. Jockey Daby was reminded to allow sufficient room to horses on his inside. Stone Crescent raced fiercely from the 1200 to approximately the 700 metres. Approaching the 1000 metres, when the pace slowed, Boomerang started to race fiercely and was taken very wide to avoid the heels of National Lore, Casual Guy and Natures Brew resulting in Play the Field, which was racing on its outside, being taken wider. From there onwards Boomerang raced wide up to the 600 metres. Passing the 1000 metres Greenbelt start to race fiercely and when being eased off the heels of Seeking The Gold, threw its head up and had a tendency to hang out. Natures Brew raced wide throughout. Casual Guy raced wide on the final turn.

? Race 7 - Prix du Conseil Municipal

At the start Game Lodge was slow out, losing about one length. Jockey Daby reported that from thereon Game Lodge raced very greenly throughout the race. Jockey Smith reported that Remote Horizon raced fiercely.

? Race 8 - The Winged Pharoah Plate

The Club?s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Western Gleam was lame on the off fore fetlock. Consequently, the horse was withdrawn at 11.45 a.m today. As a result, all bets on this horse were ordered to be refunded and betting with bookmakers was re-opened. Trainer M. Ramdin was advised that Western Gleam has been suspended from racing until it obtains a veterinary clearance. An inquiry into an incident near the 1100 metres will be held on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
