Commemorating the Father of the nation
The ministry of Arts and Culture has set up a full-day programme of activities to celebrate the 105th anniversary of the birth of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam on Sunday 18th September. The National Transport Authority will provide late night buses for the occasion.
The “official” part of the programme will take place in the morning – as from 10 a.m. – when they will be a laying of a wreath at SSR statue on Port-Louis Waterfront. Then, government officials will go to the SSR Memorial Centre for Culture to launch a publication on the centre and reward the winners of the painting competition “places honouring SSR”. The guests will then visit an exhibition of press articles on “SSR and the Welfare State” organised by the national library.
In the afternoon, the celebration will be in Kewal Nagar where the Father of the nation was born and spent his childhood. The programme will start at 3 p.m. when Sir Satcam Boolell and other officials will lay wreaths.
This is where festivities really start. After the launching of a CD including songs on SSR, Basant Soopaul, Zul Ramiah and Claudio Veeraragoo will perform with special songs written for the occasion. Then, a theatre group called Triveni Kalamandir will stage “Shradhanjali”, a play paying tribute to SSR.
Between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., there will be a concert where popular artists will perform: Zul Ramiah, DJ groupe Montagne Blanche, Alain Ramanisum, Basant Soopaul, Claudio Veeraragoo and Baja Baje Boys. Artists from India may also take part in the concert. A fireworks display will end the concert. The programme in Port-Louis and Kewal Nagar will be broadcast live on MBC-TV and radio.
