The chief minister of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh resigned yesterday, in a move which could trigger fresh elections in India?s most populous state.

Chief Minister Mayawati told her cabinet she was resigning after a row with her coalition partners in the state government, State Minister for Welfare Phagu Chauhan told reporters.

Her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which represents the Indian lower castes, had been running the government in an alliance with the national ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after inconclusive state elections in 2002.
