BEC continues consultations for introduction of Creole in 2010
The Bureau of Catholic Education (BEC) is going on with the process of implementing Creole in its primary schools. It will seize the opportunity of the International Day for the Mother Tongue on the 21st February 2008 to reassert its commitment to giving a bigger place to Creole in its education system. On Thursday, 800 teachers, 46 head teachers and 175 deputy head teachers will be asked to give their opinions about the languages used at school and the BEC project on this issue.
This questionnaire will be added to the one already supplied to parents last December and will constitute the basis for a thorough study of the use of Creole at school. 80 parents have already answered out of a total of 300. "But it is too early to state conclusions for the moment," the project coordinator, Jimmy Harmon, points out.
The idea behind these studies is to have consultations with all stakeholders to get a picture of the situation in order to move forward with the project as from next year. The conclusions of all studies are expected next December and the ?programme to introduce Creole as the medium of instruction on a pilot basis will be introduced in some schools in 2010?.
Helps reduce failure rate</B>
The BEC already has some experience in the use of Creole in primary schools, as it introduced the method in its prevocational stream some years back. The pupils were even examined in Creole last year. As teachers involved in this project are adamant that it helps reduce the failure rate, the BEC believes it could be extended to all its schools in the long term.
