Over 2,000 Asian employees of a Bahrain construction firm went on a strike demanding better pay package, just days after a similar stir by 1,800 workers, majority of whom were Indians, in an another company.

Asian workers from the Bokhowa Construction Company, based at four labour camps in the Durrat Al Bahrain development, Tubli, Ma'ameer and Sitra, downed tools on Sunday, demanding better pay packages and living conditions.

About 1,800 workers, with 1,400 Indians, at GP Zachariades (GPZ), resumed work on Friday ending their six-day strike after the company management agreed to a nearly 27 per cent hike in the salary.

?There are nearly 2,200 labourers working in this firm and all have gone on the strike,? a spokesman of the workers said.

?The salary of labourers who have been working for 10 years is BD57 - the rest get BD53,? he said, alleging that they all live in very poor condition.

The workers alleged that the company gives them a one-way ticket to go home on holiday after two years and deducts BD40 from their salary to make sure they return.

The company denied the claim. However, a spokesman for the company admitted the workers were being locked inside the camps while they continue to strike.

Meanwhile, more than 350 workers out of 450 at the Technical Construction Company and the Luqman Al Haddad Construction Company ? who downed tools on Saturday ? resumed work on Sunday after the company verbally agreed to their demands.
