Air Mauritius revises capacity and deployment
In line with the unprecedented crisis in the airline industry worldwide, Air Mauritius announced, in a press release this week, a revision of its capacity growth and fleet deployment for the current year in addition to initiatives That it had already taken to face the skyrocketing fuel prices and the softening demand in many markets.
The chief executive officer (CEO) of Air Mauritius, Manoj Ujoodha, says: ?The airline has been hedging its fuel requirements as far as possible and applying fuel surcharges in line with the industry?s responses. These initiatives have helped us mitigate the effects of the fuel hikes last year. However, the current industry outlook and our own forecasts demand additional initiatives.?
These initiatives concern primarily a curtailment of capacity growth from 4% to 1% ? that will allow the airline to offer over 1.7 million seats for the year. Moreover, the local airline company has restructured its interventions in order ?to maintain the current network and all present destinations while realigning capacity to demand especially in the low season?. The release further adds that these new measures are not going to affect the tourist industry in any way. ?At planned seat occupancy rates, the national airline will still provide for adequate capacity to support the country?s tourism growth objectives.?
