“We have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas”
Santa how do you feel after this journey around the planet distributing gifts?</B>
The reindeers and I are very tired, it’s no easy task to circumnavigate the earth, wait until children are asleep, locate their houses and lay down their gifts by the Christmas tree.
Why do you leave so fast each time you come for Christmas, you could have stayed couple of days for rest and holidays?</B>
Planet Earth is a beautiful place indeed but there is so much to do elsewhere.
<B>What do you mean elsewhere, is the Earth not the only planet to host life?</B>
You must be either really arrogant or blinded by rationalism to conceive Earth as the only place to host life in this universe. It’s not because you have not discovered something that it does not exist. The future will prove me right one day. Besides on your planet Earth, in spite of all the joy and sharing surrounding Christmas, I still feel uncomfortable with all the inequality that prevails.
<B>What sort of inequality are you referring to?</B>
As an example, billons are being spent on toys and gifts while there are more than 3 billion poverty victims on your planet. Around one billion children are incapable of writing a letter to me because they are illiterate. I always feel bad when I am unable to fulfil the dreams of those who, in spite of their poor conditions, write to me, only because their parents cant foot the bills. I wish there were more sponsors to help me do so.
<B> Has it always been this way for Christmas?</B>
My predecessor, Saint Nicholas used to secretly distribute gifts to the poor during the festive season. There was not so much discrimination in those times and not so many toys on the market too. People were happier with each other’s presence than with material gifts. …We have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas.
What is the true meaning of Christmas, then?</B>
Well Christmas is above all the celebration of the birth of Christ, the King of Kings according to Christians. A king who, however, was born in a stable like the poorest of the poor, showing among other things that poverty is not a curse from above but a man-made problem. Unfortunately, up to now, man has not been able to address this problem although I must admit there are many people and organisations like Mohamed Yunus, founder of Grameem Bank, and Bill Gates, who work to improve the situation.
Last question Santa, before you go, could you tell us where you live?</B>
You wont believe me, but I’m in fact live in your mind. I am a virtual being fabricated by your forefathers. Depending on which hemisphere you live, I translate your timeless inherited fears of the winter solstice on the one hand; and the cyclonic and dry summers on the other. I am the mind, which escapes in the dream of a better world underpinned by the joy and life of gifts and firecrackers. A mind, which far from the primal fears and lost in the madding crowd today, only tends to think about its own self, favouring competition in lieu of collaboration, putting its trust in things in lieu of people and preferring the superficial to the essential.
A last wish before we see you again next year?</B>
I wish you all a very happy new year. May your dreams come true and may you stick to your good resolutions because, deep in your mind, you’ll find a man who is even more peace-loving than myself ; deep inside your mind, you’ll find your true you!
