● UNFIT MAURITIANS? The Non Communicable Disease Survey of the ministry of Health reveals that 83% of Mauritians ? 90% of women and 75% of men ? do not practise any physical activity. 35.5% of people are obese or at least suffer from overweight. As Mauritians mainly suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes and heart problems, sports could be the best way of preventing such diseases. But it seems the ministry is having difficulty passing on the word. Most people simply do not feel the need for practising a sport and do not realise how beneficial it could be for their health.

● ANXIOUS BUSINESSMEN ? Businessmen are quite anxious about the future of Mauritius, reports the survey of the Mauritius Employers? Federation (MEF) on business trends for 2008. Law and order, road congestion, price rises and corruption are some of the reasons for their lack of confidence. Most of them believe that there is still too much state interference in the businesses. However, they are still more optimistic about their internal situation this year compared to the same period last year. The growth rate in profitable sectors such as tourism, construction, textile and financial services are among the causes of satisfaction for members of the private sector.

● NOT A DROP TO DRINK ? Despite the heavy rains of the last few weeks, the Central Water Authority (CWA) still can?t afford to supply more water to consumers. The level of reservoirs is still worrying, the more so as the rainy season is coming to an end at the end of March. As a result, the programme of water cuts remains the same and some regions are still supplied with water once a day only. However, some towns benefit from longer hours of water supply thanks to the improved situation of water tables. The CWA made it clear that it would do an effort to extend the supplying periods when it feels it can but it still has to be very cautious. The institution is thinking of other ways of getting water but realizes any other method would cost a lot and take a lot of time.
