Do we want to have principles?
Hearing what has been said in a new polemic on life imprisonment outraged me. That they share the view of some politics that want a referendum on re-establishing the death sentence, that they say they do not have to take lessons from judges ?who work for their own interests?, such populism makes me shiver. Next step is to ask people to express their opinion on abortion or whatever is not familiar to what we think we know. And flatter the vile instincts. Do we want progress, do we really believe we can get educated and stand in society with principles, anything else than to like likeness, expecting the expected, succumbing to evil because, as good apprentice sorcerers, we know it is there? There are issues on which we just can?t decide with a referendum. When in a tribunal convicts are judged, there is no TV, no SMS votes for or against.
Have we forgotten why?
Do we want democracy? Do we merit the challenge of democracy? Could we debate on ?Can the atrocity of crimes nourish retaliation by death sentence?? Or ?Why do we want that last recourse now?? or even ?Did they murder for some reason?? All this without a gross referendum. What is being said to us now by some is: now that we are all in the arena, those who have their seat: show your finger up or down, as you please ! Vox populist, vox dei! Bravo, with just the common chorus on such issues in the ears, there will never be any doubt, any room for debate. The deaf themselves will not be challenged. Does nobody feel harmed by such trash? In that case, in our country of religions, we should be prepared for the priest to be taught by the parish, the assembly to speak for the president, and, maybe, thieves to bark for the dog? So I will let myself suggest a first referendum on ?Do we want to have principles?. It will solve everything, for sure. A last question: would all that game on principles have been possible in a country where a stubborn conventional mindset was not cherished as a form of culture?
