Overseas educational fairs: new avenues towards university life
Parents have always had a fear of sending their children abroad due to various problems that may occur. The increasing success of overseas educational fairs is due to the guarantees that are offered. If overseas education has always attracted youngsters, today, parents are also concerned. The event organized by the Overseas Educational Centre (OVEC) during the weekend once again showed the high demand for foreign universities. ?There were around 3,500 visitors at the fair. There was a good feedback. The direct interaction with university representatives reassures parents. With such fairs, the parents even meet the contact persons and have their contact numbers in case they want to enquire about their wards. This makes them feel more confident?, explains Dorish Chitson, the OVEC Coordinator.
Another organisation holding its overseas educational fair is the IDP. This is scheduled for Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd February at Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel, from 10.30am to 5pm. ?The objectives of such fairs have been to help students make a better choice of fields of study and institutions. The students have more precise answers and appropriate counselling from the university representatives themselves. The atmosphere is more real and alive?, says Christine Faugoo, director of the IDP.
The varieties of fields of study, the different courses and specializations offered have always been the centre of interest for most students. The tertiary institutions in Mauritius are few and the choices are limited. We find almost the same courses being offered in almost every tertiary institution. Overseas education opportunities provide an unlimited choice of destinations, institutions and courses offered at different and competitive prices, which the students can opt for according to choice and appropriateness.
Another factor for the success of such overseas educational fairs is that today, the institutions organizing them also take the responsibility for visas and accommodation services as well as counseling and support services. Thus, there is more of a home-like atmosphere and care.
Some institutions also provide work placements. As well as having some work experience, the financial burden of students and parents is lightened somewhat. The students don?t have to rely completely on their parents for their pocket money. Another advantage is that when the students come back to put their acquired skills and knowledge to use in the country; they can seize job opportunities as they already have some work experience.
Overseas education is today not only an academic product but a whole package where both education and quality of lifestyle are valued. Overseas education, a holistic glamorous package!
