Suffering from the legacy of slavery
The abolition of slavery is often an occasion for some people to engage into a wasteful and hateful trial of our white brothers.
Yet, this historical landmark should be rather seized as an opportunity to look at what can be further done to rehabilitate citizens who are still suffering from the legacy of slavery.Acting otherwise rather would deflect focus from worthy issues.
Have slave descents, for instance, been fully liberated from the heritage of the code noir that once determined each and every aspects of their ancestors? existence?
As an example, can you seriously believe that the fact that their ancestors were denied the right to buy lands, engage into business, practice their customs and traditions and even consider themselves humans have had no influence on the development of slave descents in this country?
Have the remnants of slavery been fully exorcised?
Well, I really do not have the answer but I feel that unless we first of all accept the fact that modern slavery is a unique type of human exploitation based on racism and that slave descents need to teach their history in an even more objective and dispassionate manner, the rehabilitation process wont be able to progress further.
Moreover, a dose of positive discrimination; more aggressive promotion of the importance of education among slave descents whose ancestors were denied this vital key to success; fighting evils like alcoholism and drug addiction and militating against crime and violence are no less vital measures to abort the insidious legacy of slavery.
Furthermore, hatred can only but ruin the social fabrics of our multicultural paradise.
It does not have its place in the commemoration of the abolition of slavery, therefore let?s holds the hands of our white fellow citizens and see how we can together fight other forms of slaveries while helping those who are still suffering from the one we have buried in 1835.
