The Sugar Industry Efficiency (Amendment) Bill will be introduced in Parliament today by the minister of Agro-industry, Arvin Boolell. The bill reduces the age for voluntary retirement (VRS) – from 50 to 45 for women and from 55 to 50 for men. Likewise, the bill will allow all agricultural and non-agricultural workers under the VRS to obtain a two-month compensation for each year of service. Moreover, a training programme is included in this bill as well as more flexibility for the employment of seasonal workers.
MCB in the sights of the Icac</B>
The Independent Commission against Corruption (Icac) is considering the possibility of suing the Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) in the context of the embezzlement of the National Pensions Fund (NPF). Two executives of the bank – André Wong Ting Fook, head of accountancy and treasury, and J-F Desvaux de Marigny, the company secretary – have been questioned by the commission concerning the fraud. It seems to point at the bank because it did not take appropriate measures to better control its internal system.
Potential investors from China</B>
Fifteen Chinese companies are arriving this week to look at the possibilities of investing in the economic and commercial zone of cooperation. This zone is still at project stage but many companies already look very interested in investing in Mauritius. This Chinese industrial zone will most probably be located in Riche-Terre as it is quite close to the port. A delegation of the textile group Tianli, the initiator of the project, will accompany the potential investors (in many different sectors) to convince them that the zone will be profitable for them. Most products made in that zone will be exported to Europe, the United States and Africa.
Gokhool confirms his (new) position
After being more than determined to implement his A+ formula and national colleges, the minister of Education, Dharam Gokhool, now looks even more determined to get rid of the whole system. In Parliament last Tuesday, he said the ultimate objective of a complete curriculum change was to get rid of the present system of evaluation – and particularly the Certificate of Primary Education exams. In an interview to l’express, he also admitted that the reform was urgent and that measures to implement would be taken within the next three or four years.
