Drivers should experience a happy end of the year. Thanks to a world drop in the price of petrol since last July, the Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM) should review its price downwards ? if the international situation remains stable. Even if the price of petrol had already started to decrease on the international market before the latest APM exercise, the drop was not passed on to consumers. But this time, they should benefit from it.

The Organisation of Petrol Exporting Countries is trying to stabilise the price of petrol at about 60 $ - against 70 $ during the months preceding July. However, in view of the regular rise over the past few months, the situation should remain quite hard for Mauritius. This is why saving on petrol appears as a must and the government should encourage ethanol production.

With this in mind, the initiative taken by Total to launch a pilot-project in collaboration with Alcodis to put to the test a few vehicles driving with a mixture of petrol and ethanol appears a step in the right direction. The high price of petrol also explains the increase in the number of vehicles using Liquefied Petroleum Gas.

But cars and other vehicles are not the only ones affected by the rise. This is why the Central Electricity Board is working on a project to reduce its petrol consumption by using other sources of energy.
